It’s All About Balance

I had the realization recently that most all of life should be balanced. This sounds so simple and obvious but rarely do we think it all the way through. The food we eat should be balanced. The books we read should be balanced, what we watch and listen to. Anything that is consumed should be balanced.

What we devote our time to should be balanced. Our emotions should be balanced. This does not mean be happy all the time. This does not mean salads everyday. This does not mean every book should be nonfiction. It means we should be happy, but we should also be sad. We should be sad, mad, excited, joyful, peaceful, and surprised. We shouldn’t be all at the same time.

Maybe every other book is fiction. Maybe one month it’s all Tom Clancy, the next it’s Emily Henry, and the next book is about tuberculosis.

Three books I’ve read (and/or finished) in the last year. “Book Lovers” -Emily Henry; “Everything is Tuberculosis” -John Green; “Without Remorse” -Tom Clancy

Food should not always be salads. Food should be balanced. One meal it’s pancakes, waffles, and French toast. The next meal you have steak, potatoes, and asparagus. The next meal a Chick-fil-A salad.

Life should rarely be one sided. Yes, we should have stuff we enjoy but we should not keep ourselves locked into our enjoyments when we can explore everything.

Life should rarely be one sided. There may be seasons when it’s one sided, but we should explore and learn new things. Learn new things about what we love and enjoy, and new things about what we don’t like as much or enjoy. It is difficult to know if we hate something when haven’t explored it.

How do I know I hate poetry if I haven’t explored and learned about poetry? How can I say something is bad if I haven’t thought about it? Should I say electric vehicles are bad when I don’t know what they do? What are the benefits of EVs? What are the disadvantages? I need to balance my learning to truly and deeply learn.

Balance and learning. If we do not balance what we have, we can’t know what we prefer. If we do not learn more, we can’t find more of what we love. If we do not balance our learning we may never know truth in its entirety.

Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.

I’ve always felt that a person’s intelligence is directly reflected by the number of conflicting points of view he can entertain simultaneously on the same topic.
